Dolphins RB depth chart analysis following a Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars
The Miami Dolphins secured a come-from-behind win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at home in Miami in Week 1. So, how did the Dolphins utilize their running backs in Week 1?
Here is the Dolphins RB depth chart breakdown for Week 1.
Dolphins RB Depth Chart Breakdown
Jason Sanders drilled a 52-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Miami Dolphins to a thrilling 20-17 season-opening win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in Miami Gardens. Trailing 17-7 at halftime, Miami’s defense stepped up, shutting out the Jaguars in the second half to pave the way for the comeback victory.
De’Von Achane significantly impacted the passing game and led the Dolphins in snaps, logging 37 compared to Raheem Mostert’s 31. While the workload was split fairly evenly, Jeff Wilson Jr. contributed late in the game with 11 snaps, utilizing his fresh legs to average 5.2 yards on five carries. Despite a lackluster rushing overall from Mostert and Achane, Achane stood out in the passing attack, catching seven passes for 76 yards. He also scored the Dolphins’ first touchdown of the season with a 1-yard run, an area where the team struggled in 2023.
Head coach Mike McDaniel incorporated fullback Alec Ingold in key short-yardage situations, calling two third-and-one runs, both of which were successfully converted. In this game, Ingold matched his total carry count from the previous season alone. Notably, the Dolphins were near the bottom of the league in third-and-short rushing attempts in 2023, a trend McDaniel appears to be addressing.
Jeff Wilson effectively played the closer role, notching five carries for 26 yards in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory.
1. De’Von Achane – RB1
Rookie De’Von Achane showcased his versatility, particularly in the passing game. While his rushing performance (8 carries for 26 yards) was modest, he caught seven passes for 76 yards, establishing himself as a dual-threat option. Achane’s big-play ability makes him an essential part of the Dolphins’ offensive scheme moving forward.
2. Raheem Mostert – RB2
Mostert led the backfield in Week 1, carrying the ball 10 times for 40 yards and punching in a key 3-yard touchdown. He also added two receptions for nine yards.
3. Jeff Wilson Jr. – RB3
Wilson came in late, playing 11 snaps in the fourth quarter, and contributed with fresh legs. He recorded five carries for 26 yards, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Wilson is clearly the “closer” back in this rotation, stepping in to seal the game when needed.
4. Deuce Vaughn – Depth Option
Deuce Vaughn saw limited action, playing just two snaps in Week 1. His role may remain minimal unless an injury or game plan requires his specific skill set.
