Prediction for Arizona vs. Kansas State

This is a pivotal early-season matchup between two teams with Big 12 title hopes and College Football Playoff ambitions. Kansas State comes into Week 3 riding the momentum of a hard-fought, come-from-behind road win at Tulane. At the same time, Arizona nearly stumbled last weekend in a lackluster win over Northern Arizona.

Avery Johnson, the former Kansas high school player of the year, stayed close to home to lead the Wildcats, and in his first full season as the starting quarterback, he’s quickly becoming a standout in college football. A true dual threat, Johnson has been dynamic both through the air and on the ground, ranking as Kansas State’s second-leading rusher while throwing for 334 yards and four touchdowns, making him a valuable fantasy play.

On the other side is Heisman hopeful Noah Fifita, who had a stellar start to the season for Arizona, tossing 422 yards and four touchdowns in the opener against New Mexico. However, his Week 2 performance was more subdued, failing to reach 200 passing yards and managing just one touchdown in a sloppy victory over Northern Arizona. Both quarterbacks will be key in this intriguing non-conference matchup.

Both squads enter the game at 2-0, but neither has covered the spread yet. They are 0-2 ATS after failing to deliver as favorites. This contest will likely hinge on which defense can make the crucial stops. Arizona has been solid against the run, ranking 44th nationally in rushing yards allowed, and they have the personnel to slow down Kansas State’s ground game.

Though it may not be enough for Arizona to pull off a road win, they should be able to keep pace with Kansas State. Noah Fifita must play mistake-free football, but his dynamic skill set could present problems for Kansas State’s defense, keeping this game close.

The Prediction: Kansas State 31, Arizona 27

Best Bet: Arizona +7.5
